How BBSRC ICURe helped my spinout succeed
The BBSRC Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) programme trains, funds, and supports research teams to determine whether there is a market for products or services that utilise their bioscience-based ideas, research, science, and technologies.
This opportunity is open to a range of applicants, including:
• research technicians and technology and skills specialists
• PhD students
• discovery Fellows and group leaders
• postdocs and early career researchers
Dr James Gavin used ICURe to commercially apply his research in bioengineered extracellular vesicles leading to a later Innovate UK spin-out, EVolution Therapeutics. Watch the video to hear from him and Professor Andrew Devitt, who advised on the project, on their success.

How a BBSRC Flexible Talent Mobility award helped my research
Переглядів 307 місяців тому
Knowledge exchange is a crucial part of facilitating mobility between academic, business, public sector and third-sector organisations. Flexible Talent Mobility Accounts (FTMAs) support placements and exchanges for bioscience research staff from and to universities, BBSRC institutes, businesses, policy, or other settings in the UK and overseas. This enables cross-sector and interdisciplinary kn...
Why funding for fundamental science is so important for sustainable agriculture
Переглядів 253Рік тому
In order to feed the world's growing population we need innovative solutions to unlock the potential of agricultural systems. The North Wyke Farm Platform is a large-scale research facility - a farm lab - with the clear and distinct aim of making farming a more sustainable endeavour. We spoke to Dr Phil Le Grice about why the work the North Wyke team does is so important. See BBSRC News for the...
The journey of a BBSRC grant application
Переглядів 138Рік тому
What happens after you submit a grant application to BBSRC? How are grants peer reviewed? And with so many world-class projects seeking support, how does BBSRC decide what to fund? This short video takes you behind the scenes. Every funding opportunity is different, so this exact process won't apply to them all - but most will have some combination of these steps. We're constantly working to im...

The scientists trying to improve UK-grown fruit and veg
Переглядів 2732 роки тому
What if we could grow more of our fruit and veg in the UK and cut our food miles? That's one of the aims of the Horticulture Quality and Food Loss Network, a BBSRC-funded network of academics and industrial experts working on some of the industry's trickiest problems. Professor Carol Wagstaff is the Co-Director of the network. Here, she tells us about some of the challenges the network is tackl...
North Wyke: the farm helping us study the impact of livestock farming
Переглядів 1,2 тис.2 роки тому
There's a lot of debate about how farming livestock for meat and dairy is affecting our planet. North Wyke Farm in Devon, run by Rothamsted Research, is helping to answer some of the biggest scientific questions about how we can feed the world sustainably. Everything is monitored at North Wyke. Researchers can keep track of where the water goes and how clean it is, the farm's greenhouse gas emi...
What happens when you switch farmland from livestock to crops?
Переглядів 5292 роки тому
What would happen to our carbon emissions if the world went vegan? The answer isn't as simple as you'd think. If falling demand for meat and dairy encourages farmers to stop farming livestock and grow crops instead, could it actually cause a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions from the soil? Professor Andy Neal at Rothamsted Research is trying to answer that question. Working at Harpenden ...
Can we help plants become more resilient to climate change?
Переглядів 2032 роки тому
Climate change is a big problem for plants - and that makes it a big problem for us. Changing rainfall and temperature patterns are making some of the world's most important agricultural regions less suitable for the crops we rely on, reducing yields and raising prices. With the world's population expanding, that's bad news for food security. Professor Lars Østergaard heads up the Genes in the ...
Taking the toxins out of a climate change hero crop
Переглядів 1512 роки тому
Grasspea is a tough plant. Farmers in South Asia and East Africa plant it because they know it can withstand drought and flooding when little else can - and they're increasingly having to rely on it as climate change worsens. But there's a catch - grasspea produces a toxin, and eating too much of it when you're malnourished can leave you permanently paralysed. Dr Peter Emmrich and his team at t...

It is hard to believe that the survival of any living thing other than our parasites and gut bacteria depends on humans. Yes, we do have domesticated animals and cultivated plants, but they are the result of our direct, conscious efforts, whereas these birds have figured out how to use us on their own.

The case is very true on inverse angle when giant passion fruit in come into the mix of food engineering, for it off course we would engineer it to exceed the current size of 1.5 to 2kg to over five using selective breading. This two are the beginning of engineering our food to feed us all, by that so many other crops and animals will be categories for already explain procedure in a more detail to better develop society for peaceful co existence at a time of mass job lay offs as robotics and artificial intelligence take our jobs.

  • @samwelndonga8795

The know how is very tool we have been using on almost every crop and animals you can think of in food revolution, although we mainly focused on increasing the size, only Chiwawa dog that isn't food is what we consider going small. some might argue but we have native chickens for that, yes we do but its as efficient as we can engineer pigs. For starter with pigs we can feed it grasses, nepia grass, weeds to all manner of vegetation to constitute half of their diet. Something chickens feed on but account to two percentage of their diet. the rest cereals off course in case we aren't on the same page. cereals are expensive and will continue to be even more expensive, more so as water stress trickle down to lowering yield of cereals. the very eases that make cereals a no dependent of future feeds to animals is the fact that they not only need to much water to yield but also take longer time to mature, in comparison with nepia grass that we intend to harvest shoots on germination, its recommended we relook into replacing native chickens with smaller pig variety.

  • @samwelndonga8795
    @samwelndonga8795 2 місяці тому

for year humanity has always been about increasing the size of the crop to increase the yield, that is still the case for some varieties but unfortunately opposite in same cases. the very key to future of food science, in that dimension its actually very useful to also bread small pigs, this way this small pig species of adult being in the range of two kilogram to max of five on maturity is the future shoot. by this small households will have them within household with nutrition requirement so low that the people can afford to let them rom around like native chickens, feed on household leftovers and freely sourced grasses. Big is usually necessary for commercial end, the exert opposite when households are concerned. In the end this small hold farming within the households will yield more than they can consume for the market, by then they would have certisfy their anger. By the way the idea isn't about producing for the market but get them off the food grid to ease on demand on food in relation to urban dwellers. food science of the future must go increasing the size as well as decreasing depending on variety of food. knowing which and how to engineer the size will determine the food security of the future, the very key to peace within communities of social inequality.
